NEC Display RS-232 Commands: Complete Control Guide for AV Integrators
NEC MultiSync professional displays use a binary HEX protocol and — critically — require a null modem (crossover) cable rather than straight-through.
Serial Port Settings
| Parameter | Value |
| Baud Rate | 9600 |
| Data Bits | 8 |
| Parity | None |
| Stop Bits | 1 |
| Flow Control | None |
| Cable Type | **Null modem (crossover)** |
Important: NEC requires a null modem cable — Pin 2 and Pin 3 must be swapped. This is opposite to most other AV devices. If you have no response, swapping to a null modem cable usually solves it immediately.

Daisy Chaining
NEC supports daisy chaining via RS-232 OUT to IN. Set each display to a unique Monitor ID in its menu, then address commands to specific displays by changing the Monitor ID byte in the packet.
Common Mistakes
- ▸Straight-through cable — NEC requires null modem. This is the most common mistake
- ▸Not waiting between commands — NEC requires at least 600ms between commands
- ▸RS-232 not enabled — enable external control in the display menu first
