NEC Display RS-232 Commands: Complete Control Guide for AV Integrators

May 1, 2026

NEC MultiSync professional displays use a binary HEX protocol and — critically — require a null modem (crossover) cable rather than straight-through.

Serial Port Settings

ParameterValue
Baud Rate9600
Data Bits8
ParityNone
Stop Bits1
Flow ControlNone
Cable Type**Null modem (crossover)**

Important: NEC requires a null modem cable — Pin 2 and Pin 3 must be swapped. This is opposite to most other AV devices. If you have no response, swapping to a null modem cable usually solves it immediately.

Daisy Chaining

NEC supports daisy chaining via RS-232 OUT to IN. Set each display to a unique Monitor ID in its menu, then address commands to specific displays by changing the Monitor ID byte in the packet.

Common Mistakes

  • Straight-through cable — NEC requires null modem. This is the most common mistake
  • Not waiting between commands — NEC requires at least 600ms between commands
  • RS-232 not enabled — enable external control in the display menu first
